· Susan Bothmann - Coordinator

PLS has a new coordinator. Susan Bothmann started with the service on 20 November 2004 following the resignation in July of the previous coordinator. Whilst she is new to the Queensland scene, Susan comes to PLS with a vast accumulation of legal aid experience. Most recently she was Principal Solicitor of Kamilaroi Aboriginal Legal Service based in Tamworth. She lived and worked in Vanuatu for several years during which time she held positions on the Law Council and was President of the Law Society and lecturer at the University of South Pacific. She was appointed Commissioner to the first Victoria Legal Aid Commission in the seventies and was its first solicitor in Sydney when Public Interest Advocacy Centre was established in the eighties. She spent 6 months in British Columbia on a research grant from the Victoria Law Foundation. She is a life member of the Fitzroy Legal Service. We are delighted to have her on board and have already experienced the benefit of her knowledge and administrative skills.

· Nigel Chan - Casework Solicitor

Nigel graduated from QUT with a double degree of Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Business (Management). He was admitted as a solicitor in Queensland after completing QUT’s Legal Practice Course. Nigel requested work experience placement at Prisoners’ Legal Service and was offered a permanent position as casework solicitor for the Service in late 2002. Nigel also tutors Administrative Law among other law subjects at Griffith University on a casual basis. Previously, he worked for the QUT Student Guild as the Student Services Coordinator. His earlier employment also includes working as an accounts keeper for a travel agency. Originally born in Singapore, he moved to the United States and lived in San Francisco and New York for a period of 4 years. He now resides in Brisbane and has called this place home for over 15 years.

· Shebash Pather - Administration Officer

Shebash Pather is the new administration officer at PLS. She started temping for PLS in May 2004 and then took up a more permanent position as of September 2004. She had emigrated from South Africa in January 2004, where she was employed by Legal Aid, Durban for 3 years. Shebash then took up employment with Lexis Nexis, the legal publishers, as a legal editor for 2 years. Having practiced in South Africa as a solicitor, she is hoping to, in the future, complete her conversion examinations in Queensland, and obtain a practicing certificate. We are pleased to have Shebash as part of the PLS team and hope to gain from her experience in both the legal and administrative fields.
